Transforming Research into Action: Advancing Injury Prevention Through Innovative Translational Science
About us
The Translational Research for Injury Prevention (TRIP) Lab at The University of Alabama is a cutting-edge facility made possible through partnerships between the Institute for Social Science Research, the Alabama Transportation Institute, and Mercedes-Benz USA International. It harnesses innovative technology and a unique psychological perspective to tackle critical issues surrounding road safety. At the core of the TRIP Lab is a state-of-the-art driving simulator ingeniously crafted from a real Mercedes GLE 63S AMG. This innovative setup offers researchers a fully immersive environment, allowing participants to experience driving scenarios that closely mimic real-life conditions. The simulator captures both the physical aspects of driving and the psychological factors influencing driver behavior.

Can connected vehicle data help detect traffic danger before crashes happen? Our new paper in the Journal of Transport Geography shows that the answer is YES! Using connected vehicle data from San Antonio, this study develops a framework to detect and analyze near-crash events. Results show that most occur at high speeds (over 57.98 mph) and very close distances (under 20 m), with higher risk on roads carrying more large vehicles, especially major roads and during weekday peak hours. The findings highlight how speed control, real-time monitoring, and adaptive traffic management can reduce near-crash risk and improve urban safety. Please cite: Li, X., Wu, D., Ye, X., & Sun, Q. Most drivers involved in crashes are close to home. Comfort and routine can reduce focus behind the wheel. Safe driving starts with staying alert on every trip, no matter how familiar the road. Visit drivesafealabama.org for safe driving tips.

Sometimes, the smallest gestures come at exactly the right time. This week, several of our Translational Research for Injury Prevention Laboratory (TRIP LAB) students are in New Orleans presenting at SEPA. I had casually mentioned how much I missed the city—and Café Du Monde in particular. Last night, a photo popped up in my Teams chat: the students, with beignets, thinking of me. It was a simple moment, but one that shifted my entire outlook when I needed it most. Grateful for thoughtful students, meaningful connections, and the reminder that what we say—and do—matters more than we realize. #TRIPLab #ISSR #TideResearch #RollTide #UA #SEPA #NOLA

More than 75% of domestic violence survivors suffer single or repeated brain injuries. This statistic underscores a critical, often overlooked public health issue. Brain injuries resulting from intimate partner violence can have lasting cognitive, emotional, and behavioral impacts—yet many go unrecognized and untreated. At ISSR, we are committed to advancing research and outreach through initiatives like COMPASS and BRAVO Vets to better understand, identify, and support those affected. Raising awareness is essential to improving outcomes and ensuring survivors receive the care they deserve. #ISSR #TRIPLab #BRAVOVets #COMPASS #UA #BrainInjuryAwareness #DomesticViolenceAwareness #TideResearch
