On 23rd December 2025 the Government altered proposals previously announced in the Spring Budget 2025 to restrict agricultural property relief (APR) and business property relief (BPR). It announced that the new allowance for 100% agricultural property relief (APR) and business property relief (BPR) for inheritance tax (IHT) will instead be increased from £1m to £2.5m. The changes are currently anticipated to be effective from 6th April 2026. The Spring Budget of 2025 was a blow for many farming families and landowners because of its introduction to restrictive allowances on land and business assets that had previously had an unlimited allowance for inheritance tax. The Autumn Budget 2025 and an announcement on 23rd December 2025 introduced more generous and ‘watered down’ tax plans. The changes are anticipated to be effective from 6th April 2026. In the Landed Estates and Rural Affairs team here at Weightmans we routinely see farming families grappling with the same family issues. These may include trying to treat children fairly when estate planning or experiencing problems with in-laws (often where everyone lives on the same farm). In extreme cases the future of the farm itself may be threatened by family fallouts and subsequent court action. Against the changed tax landscape (which is difficult enough to navigate) it is important to face these challenges head on and take control with effective planning and practical solutions.
