Appalachia ⛰️ is the salamander capital of the world - with more salamander species spread across the eastern United States than anywhere else in the world. But one of its rarest residents is slipping away. Only a few hundred Yellow-spotted Woodland Salamanders remain, clinging to fragile rock faces across central Appalachia—habitat increasingly blasted apart by mountaintop removal mining. ➡️ A lawsuit filed in January by Center for Biological Diversity calls on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to act on what science has already shown and protect this species under the Endangered Species Act. This protection would mean safeguarding what little salamander habitat remains and putting a recovery plan in motion—before this species becomes another name we say only in the past tense. 🟢 Re:wild is honored to help power Appalachia Rising, the first-ever network of community-led organizations uniting across the entire Appalachia region to safeguard dozens of threatened species by protecting some of the most biodiverse and irreplaceable lands in the United States. • 🐸 9,000 amphibian species ...and counting! >> https://lnkd.in/eZt6RQGP A ribbiting milestone has been reached. More than 9,000 amphibian species (frogs, salamanders and caecilians) have now been described (formally recognized, named and documented) worldwide. That’s up from 5,743 species described in 2004, and just over 8,000 in 2022. But this growing knowledge comes with urgency. Nearly 3,000 amphibian species are threatened with extinction. They're the most threatened vertebrate group ion the planet, yet they receive only a fraction of global conservation funding. Amphibians are vital indicators of ecosystem health. They regulate insects, support food webs, and signal the condition of freshwater and forest habitats that people depend on, too. This milestone reflects years of global collaboration. At Re:wild, our team directly supports amphibian conservation in part through the @iucnssc Amphibian Specialist Group and the Amphibian Red List Authority, helping describe and assess species and ensure amphibians are counted, understood and protected.

In 2024 alone, a whopping 260 freshwater fish were formally recorded as new species 🐠 Researchers and taxonomists from around the world contributed to #NewSpecies 2024, describing some remarkable fishes in all their incredible diversity. The class of 2024 included: 🪱 Berlin's Bloodworm Eel, a fish so unlikely you'd barely believe it's a fish at all. 👁️ Lord Sauron Pacu, named after the villainous Lord of the Rings antagonist. 🌈 Rainbow Makou, highly attractive and already very popular in the aquarium trade. • 💦 🐸 Romeo, once known as the world's loneliest frog, has died, but the attention that Romeo brought to Critically Endangered Sehuencas Water Frogs continues to offer renewed hope for the species. When Romeo was brought into a conservation breeding program in Bolivia in 2009, he was the only known member of his species. His story touched people around the world and mobilized a search effort that found five other Sehuencas Water Frogs in 2018. Most recently, herpetologists have unexpectedly found a new population of Sehuencas Water Frogs in Carrasco National Park in Bolivia! The small population is only the second found in the wild since 2009 and the frogs are successfully breeding — making this discovery vital to protecting this species. Sehuencas Water Frogs are threatened by habitat destruction as the result of agricultural expansion, in addition to climate change, disease, pollution and the introduction of invasive exotic species to their streams. 📸: Robin Moore/Re:wild

  • Even for species on the very brink of extinction, there is hope! Reverse the Red On this #ReverseTheRedDay, and as we look toward 2026, conservation is proving that when science, communities, and sustained investment come together, species can--and do--recover. Each year, the IUCN SSC tracks wildlife populations worldwide, and more species are recovering because of long-term, collaborative action. Together with partners across the globe, Re:wild is focused on scaling what works to secure a future where many more species can recover ...and stay recovered. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the world’s most trusted system for tracking how close species are to extinction. Scientists assess plants and animals to understand whether populations are stable, declining, or at risk. Reverse the Red is a global movement using this science to turn those trends around—bringing partners together to reduce threats, restore habitats, and help species recover. #ReverseTheRed #ReverseTheRedDay
