What a pleasure it has been writing my first review for the Montreal Review of Books, for their Spring 2026 issue! Marie-Claire Blais is the kind of writer who writes in long, elliptical sentences and gives a reviewer plenty to think about - and it was difficult to stick to word count with everything I have to say about Together by the Sea. "We can only hope Together by the Sea, with its musings on life, so alive, fleeting and too grand, on human violence and wrongdoing, on privilege and defensiveness, on disintegrative and integrative humanity, the happy and the trusting, the insular and elitist, is not too great a lesson for us." My latest review for the Montreal Review of Books is live! 📚 Into the Loop by Samuele Collu, published by Duke University Press, examines modern attachments—both to the romantic couple and to digital algorithms. It's a fascinating exploration of how intimacy, technology, and the field of psychology increasingly shape one another. Collu's unusual, spiraling narrative style makes it a joy to read. I’ve also recently had the opportunity to write about a very different kind of book for mRb. The Darkest Night Brings Longer Days by Sirous Houshmand, published by McGill-Queen's University Press, is a deeply introspective memoir about Houshmand's journey from the U.S. back to his homeland of Iran, and eventually his imprisonment in Iran’s Evin Prison. It’s a timely and moving perspective on what calls us home, and on the meaning of human suffering. Well worth a read. https://lnkd.in/efkJyJnY So grateful for the opportunity to be in conversation with ideas and perspectives so very different from my own.
