Independent game studio crafting innovative multiplayer experiences with a remote, flexible team since 2009.

About us

M2H is an independent game development studio, known for creating innovative multiplayer experiences. Founded in 2009 by Mike Hergaarden, M2H quickly grew into a 50/50 partnership with his brother Matt Hergaarden by 2011. The studio gained recognition with browser-based and mobile games before expanding into larger projects like Crash Drive and the critically acclaimed WW1 Game Series (Verdun, Tannenberg, Isonzo). With a strong focus on multiplayer innovation, emergent gameplay, and technical excellence, M2H became a respected name in the indie game industry. The studio co-founded and developed the WW1 Game Series, which was later sold to Focus Entertainment in 2022, marking a major milestone in M2H’s journey. Today, M2H operates 100% remotely, with a flexible team of skilled freelancers and external partners assembled to fit each project’s needs. This agile, scalable approach allows M2H to continue delivering high-quality multiplayer experiences, staying independent while pushing creative and technical boundaries. Led by Mike Hergaarden, M2H remains committed to fresh, engaging game design and excellent (multiplayer) tech, always looking for new ways to innovate in the indie space.

I recently took another look at Syrnia, the little browser MMO I made over 𝟮𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼. To my surprise, it’s still alive — with hundreds of players logging in daily, keeping the world going. What amazed me even more were the stories I rediscovered:  • At least four couples met in Syrnia, got 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 (some moved countries) and now have kids.  • The community even has a 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 page for almost 50 players who sadly passed away over all these years.  • And then there’s Slave Hack, another old project of mine — a game about hacking, which once went viral on Digg and inspired one player a bit too much, leading to a real-world 𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁. (Don’t worry — he later turned his skills to good use in IT security.) It’s both surreal and humbling that something I built as a teenager could become part of people’s lives in such unexpected ways. Insane to think the 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 might already be 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝘁 XD. Moments like these remind me why I’ve always been drawn to multiplayer: not just about playing, but about the real connections behind the screen. 👉 Curious about the full journey of M2H, from these quirky beginnings to today? It's surreal to type this after FIVE YEARS of work, but... ✨THE KNIGHTLING✨ IS OUT NOW!!! 😭 🛡️ 💨 🖤Steam: https://lnkd.in/ePqddKty 💙PlayStation 5: https://lnkd.in/e5YNxsEz 💚Xbox Series X|S: https://lnkd.in/euSwVZht We are so proud of the result and we can't wait for the whole world to jump, slide and adventure through this colorful new world we created! What a journey - after Pine launched in 2019, we grew the Twirlbound team from 7 to 15 over the course of this project. We were hoping to attract some new people, but we never expected to be this lucky with the sheer talent that came with this team expansion... To those who took the dive and joined our colorful endeavors, a massive shoutout to Daphne, Sasha, Isa, Dave, Lotte, Ciska, Jan and Shahab, alongside the original seven sticking around (Lukas, Pascal, Ilia, Timo, Martin, Marc and (signed by) Matthijs) - we can't wait to see what's next with this incredible team ❤️🔥 And as always, the collaboration with Tumult Kollektiv's Alexander, Leonhard and Jonathan has been nothing short of magical as they delivered the highest possible quality sounds and music for The Knightling. This soundtrack is truly one to stay and we can't wait to make more games with them! 🎼 Enjoy this brand new trailer, slide into the world of Clesseia and please let us know what you think! 🤩 #indiedev #gamedev #knightling
