How can a social robot support early development for young autistic children at home? Our research team from the Autism Centre for Education and Research (ACER) is leading a pioneering new study exploring how a socially assistive QTrobot can enhance early learning experiences for young autistic children. This project is a world‑first in examining how long‑term, in‑home robotic support can complement early years interventions and empower families in their daily routines. New international study launches to explore robot‑led early development support for autistic children The University of Birmingham School of Education is proud to partner with LuxAI and the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) on the world’s first large‑scale, long‑term study of an at‑home, robot-led early development programme for young autistic children. The study, funded jointly by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and the Ministry of the Economy Luxembourg, will evaluate QTrobot, LuxAI's humanoid social robot, as a tool to support autistic children aged 2.5–4.5 years in key developmental areas such as communication and language, social skills and learning. QTrobot delivers interactive learning activities through engaging games and guided exercises, adapting to each child's pace while providing families with structured support tools they can use at home. Landmark moment for both #AutismResearch and #SocialRobotics 🚀 Together with the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) and the University of Birmingham, we’ve launched the world’s first large-scale, longitudinal study on a robot-led early development program at home for young autistic children. 👉 The study will follow 69 families in the West Midlands (UK) over 10 months, exploring how #QTrobot can support children aged 2.5–4.5 years in key areas such as communication, language, social skills and learning, while also empowering parents with structured tools they can use at home. Funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and the Ministry of the Economy Luxembourg, this research will, for the first time, rigorously examine the long-term effectiveness and usability of a social robot–led program for early autism support. Early help for autistic children shouldn’t just focus on the child. It can and should empower parents too. A new article from Special Needs Jungle and Dr Barbara Sandland (University of Birmingham) introduces a “2-generational” approach, where parents and children learn together through shared tools and strategies. It shares 10 key questions parents can ask schools about SEND interventions – focusing on what the programme is, why it was chosen, how progress is measured, how parents can practise skills at home, and how learning will transfer to other settings. The article also spotlights a new research study using QTrobot, a socially assistive robot used at home over 10 months, to support autistic children’s cognitive, social and language skills – and to boost parents’ confidence in supporting their child.
