Celebrating a decade of impact with Sir David Attenborough 🌍 On 18 June, the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) marked 10 years at the David Attenborough Building, bringing together a global community united to protect and restore life on Earth. We were honoured that Sir David himself was in attendance to mark the occasion, as highlighted by the kind words of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Debbie Prentice. The event brought together conservation leaders, researchers, practitioners and supporters to reflect on CCI's journey, its ambition of catalysing further collaboration and impact for the future, and its unique partnership of ten of the world's leading conservation charities and the University of Cambridge. As we look ahead to the next decade, one key message is clear: bold partnerships will shape the future of conservation. As the IUCN co-led BIODEV2030 project comes to a close after six years, we're celebrating what collaboration can achieve for nature. Working across 15 countries, BIODEV2030 helped translate the ambitions of the Global Biodiversity Framework into practical action by bringing together governments, businesses and civil society to identify solutions that reduce pressures on biodiversity. The project has supported reforms ranging from reducing harmful subsidies and pesticide use to strengthening protections for forests and coastal ecosystems, promoting sustainable production practices, and embedding biodiversity more effectively into sectoral policies. While BIODEV2030 has come to an end, its impact continues. The partnerships, knowledge and momentum it has created will help countries continue turning biodiversity commitments into action on the ground. 🎥 Watch the video below to learn how BIODEV2030 worked—and why collaborative approaches like this are essential for building a nature-positive future. #BIODEV2030 #Biodiversity #Nature #GlobalBiodiversityFramework #NaturePositive #Conservation BIODEV2030 Expertise France AFD - Agence Française de Développement WWF-France

As the IUCN co-led BIODEV2030 project closes, we celebrate its success in translating Global Biodiversity Framework goals into concrete changes at the national and local level. After six years of efforts, the project has resulted in specific actions to transform sectoral policies and business practices across 15 countries to reduce threats to #nature. Stakeholders across all countries have prioritised and recommend reforms to better align sectoral and biodiversity policies – to redirect harmful subsidies to organic fertilisers, to enable bans on the most harmful pesticides, new protections for forests and coastal areas, policies to stop the cutting of trees for charcoal production, sustain inclusive governance mechanisms, and many others. Looking to the future and to CBD #COP17, we want to continue translating these changes into action on the ground – from awareness-raising to financing new biodiversity-friendly fishing equipment that avoids by-catch – to help conserve the diversity of life and the communities that depend on it for their livelihoods. As Barbara Pompili, French Ambassador for the Environment, said while opening the official closing event for this project, “Biodiversity is not a hindrance to development; it is a condition for it.” Learn more 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e9ZeeSdA BIODEV2030 AFD - Agence Française de Développement Expertise France WWF-France NBSAP Accelerator Partnership BIOFIN - UNDP Biodiversity Finance Initiative Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (Uganda) National Environment Management Authority Kenya Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute - EBI

2025 was a turning point for IUCN — a new mandate and a decisive moment in the future of our Union. The IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi brought together more than 10,000 participants — Members, Commissions, governments, NGOs, businesses, Indigenous Peoples and partners — making it one of the largest in our Union's history. Out of that gathering came something lasting: a new 20-year Strategic Vision and 2026–2029 Programme that match the scale of the planetary crisis we face. But the Congress was only part of the story. Across land, water and ocean ecosystems, 2025 showed that conservation works — and that nature can and does recover when we allow it to. Explore IUCN's 2025 Annual Report to see what our Union achieved together. 🌿 🔗https://lnkd.in/eHYZRdRv

Did you know that soil — home to 59% of Earth's species — remains one of our least understood ecosystems? A recent report by IUCN and Conservation International, published in Oryx, reveals a striking knowledge gap: of 8,500+ soil-dependent species assessed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, 20% are threatened with extinction, and another 20% are so poorly studied they can't even be classified. The report calls for coordinated global action: a dedicated IUCN SSC Soil Biota Working Group, stronger collaboration between regional and international bodies, and better knowledge-sharing with governments, landholders, and the public. Healthy soil underpins food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Protecting it starts with understanding it. 🔗 Link to the full report in the comments.

IUCN remembers with great respect Dr Robert C. Malpas, a distinguished conservationist whose work helped shape conservation practice across East Africa for more than four decades. As IUCN’s first Regional Representative in Eastern Africa, Rob played a key role in establishing IUCN’s regional presence in Nairobi and advancing the decentralisation of the Union’s work - helping bring conservation action closer to the regions, institutions and communities it serves. Throughout his career, Rob contributed to protected area management, species conservation, institutional development and community-centred approaches to conservation. At a time when such approaches were still emerging, he championed work that recognised the importance of aligning nature conservation with local livelihoods and human development. He is also remembered for his generosity as a mentor, supporting and challenging younger conservationists to grow in their careers and strengthen conservation leadership across the region. IUCN honours Rob’s life, his service to conservation, and his lasting contribution to nature and people. Read the full tribute: https://lnkd.in/e_i5hPk4

IUCN's approach to Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) balances ecological, social and economic priorities across deforested and degraded areas. Rather than focusing on individual sites in isolation, FLR works to regain ecological functionality while enhancing the well-being of communities that depend on those landscapes. From strengthening ecosystem resilience and biodiversity, to supporting water and soil systems and sustainable livelihoods — the benefits are wide-ranging. The seven IUCN FLR principles define what successful restoration looks like in practice — making these ideas accessible to policymakers, practitioners and anyone working on nature-based solutions to climate change. Due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, extended periods of extreme warming in seas and oceans have increased in frequency by 50% in the past 10 years and are becoming more severe. These Marine Heat Waves (MHWs) threaten marine #biodiversity and ecosystems, make extreme weather more likely, and negatively impact the fisheries, aquaculture and tourism industries. By investing in Nature-based Solutions and ambitiously reducing #FossilFuel-based emissions, we can limit the impacts of the #ClimateCrisis.
