In December, the GameUp Africa 2025 cohort, led by our partner Maliyo Games, graduated shortly after MaliyoCON, with 41 learners completing tracks in programming, art, and audio. For their final bootcamp project, three Godot teams chose to go beyond a classroom exercise and build within a real game world, creating StoryQuests for #Threadbare using our learning materials. ❤️ The video below shows a glimpse of their playable experiences. We love them all! Congratulations to the learners, mentors, and the Maliyo team 👏 #gamemaking #gamedev #gamesandlearning #opensourcegames #opensource #threadbare #endless

Instead of only learning how games are made, Milenka Gutarra Romani, Bryan Yman Gonzales, María de los Ángeles Pasapera Hoyos, and Jhanpierre Becerra Huaytalla became game creators themselves, building a quest in Threadbare. In this GameLab interview, Team Echo 9 shares the StoryQuest they created for Threadbare: a sci-fi mystery set in a damaged space station. Players take the role of Doctor Voz, sent to restore a research facility after communication is lost and signs of infection appear. Their quest combines exploration, puzzles, stealth, and environmental storytelling. An onboard AI guides players as they reactivate energy cores, avoid corrupted entities, and navigate increasingly unstable areas of the station. What makes their StoryQuest stand out is how gameplay supports the narrative — from a musical resonance puzzle that syncs sound frequencies, to tension-building visual effects and creatures formed from former crew members. This is what community game-making looks like: learners collaborating, solving problems together, and contributing directly to an open-source game world. 🎮 Watch their StoryQuest on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/gHPW527d #gamedev #gamebasedlearning #opensource #education #learningbydoing #threadbare

Some of the students in GameLab Peru didn’t just finish the program — they came back as mentors! 💜 In this video, former learners share how they supported new students in their game-making projects: helping teammates solve problems, learning GitHub together, organizing tasks, and turning ideas into playable experiences inside Threadbare, our open-source game. "Each StoryQuest has a little bit of each mentor." 🫶 Thanks, Manuel Quiñones, for being there and for taking the lead to interview learners and mentors! Jhan Pool Huayre Mauricio joined the first GameLab at the Universidad Tecnológica del Perú, looking for practical experience. What he found was preparation for his first professional job! Through the Core and More Threadbare programs, he built both technical and creative skills while learning game development alongside our mentors. He later moved into the internship experience, working directly with the Threadbare team and practicing real professional workflows such as code reviews, feedback cycles, and quality standards. When it came time for a real job interview, that experience made a difference. The habits he developed during the internship, writing cleaner code, responding to feedback, and iterating on his work, helped him land his first position in tech and are now part of his daily routine. 🧡 #Threadbare #gamebaselearning #gamedev #gamemaking #opensource

We sat down with Elina M.I. Ollila 🔜 D.I.C.E, GDC, ASU GSV and Mark Ollila (🔜 DICE Summit, GDC, ASU GSV ) and Heather Drolet to explore how microcredentials can recognize real-world skills developed through game-making. We discussed how creating games reveals learning in design, systems thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving, and how those skills can turn into portfolios, credentials, and real career pathways. We’re excited to share that Threadbare is now featured on the Games for Change Student & Educator Resources Hub! We are there now alongside amazing learning platforms like Microsoft MakeCode and others. Seeing an open-source game built with learners recognized as a classroom resource means a lot to our creator community. Threadbare isn’t just something students play; it’s something they help create. The G4C hub is full of tools educators can take directly into their learning spaces, and we’re honored to be part of that creative toolbox. Thank you! We can’t wait to see more educators and partners dive into our free resources and create with their learners. #GamesForChange #GameDev #OpenSource #LearningThroughMaking #Coding #GameBasedLearning
