As science blurs the line between healing and enhancing our bodies, Christian thought offers a language of meaning and reflection: Are we creators of ourselves, or stewards of a gift we do not fully own? Angelos Mavropoulos (Heidelberg University) explains more on our blog: https://lnkd.in/dZwa2sBD #DeGruyterBrill #Theology #Religion #Christianity #Bioethics #BodyModification #Transhumanism

We were very pleased to see our books presented at the recent Cairo International Book Fair. The TYPARABIC research team, which investigates early Arabic printing among Christian communities in the Ottoman Levant and Eastern Europe, discussed the recent volumes in the series Early Arabic Printing in the East. They also visited the important collections at the National Library of Egypt, the library at The American University in Cairo and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The rich cultural ties between Greek, Byzantine and Arabic traditions were on full display during the trip and continue to reverberate today. Learn more about the series, available in open access thanks to the European Research Council (ERC): https://lnkd.in/dMKBt4sH Pictured: Al-Azhar Mosque, books at the Romanian stand at the fair, the Church of St. George, and collections at the National Library and AUC library. #DeGruyterBrill #Egypt #Cairo #ChristianArabs #Printing

I talked to Thomas Kahlisch from Deutsches Zentrum für barrierefreies Lesen (dzb lesen) about the often difficult practical realities faced by visually impaired students and the opportunities and challenges presented by the European Accessibility Act! It's good that accessibility is no longer a niche issue and everyone—universities, libraries, and publishing houses—can contribute to it!
Check out our new blog post! 🚨 Florian Hofbauer, Archivist and Process Manager at Paradigm, sat down with Prof. Dr. Thomas Kahlisch, Director of the German Centre for Accessible Reading (Deutsches Zentrum für barrierefreies Lesen (dzb lesen)), to talk about the European Accessibility Act (EAA), unpack the challenges blind and visually impaired readers face, and discuss what institutions, publishers, and universities can do to remove barriers. Read their conversation to learn more about: 📚 The evolution of accessible formats, from Braille to DAISY to EPUB 3 📚 The role of the EAA 📚 The unique challenges of making academic literature accessible Click below to read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/euk-zn7m #ParadigmPublishingServices #GermanCentreforAccessibleReading #Accessibility #EAA #AcademicPublishing #ScholarlyPublishing #PublishingInnovation #BookPublishing #Publishing

In today's age of constant crises, the humanities are increasingly under pressure. Do we still need them at all? And if so, why do many humanities scholars struggle to present their research to the public both confidently and persuasively? Our author Johannes Franzen (Universität Mannheim) explains more on our podcast: https://lnkd.in/djsm5YcZ Photo: Marion Koell #DeGruyterBrill #Podcast #Humanities

Design is not just an embellishment, but a fundamental process of decision-making that helps us build a better life for everyone. Even Donald Trump's and Joe Biden's administrations can agree on its importance, as Clive Grinyer (former head of service design at the Royal College of Art and visiting professor at The Glasgow School of Art) writes on our blog. Announcing the publication of two new International Maritime Boundary reports available on De Gruyter Brill's online platform: Canada-Denmark/Greenland and Honduras-Nicaragua. Whitney Lackenbauer and David Gray provide a detailed report on the 2022 agreement between Canada and Denmark (together with Greenland) establishing (or, in some sections, adjusting) a nearly 4,000 kilometer-long maritime boundary from the Labrador Sea in the south to the Arctic Ocean in the north. This agreement, by delimiting Tartupaluk/Hans Island, also resolves the last Arctic territorial sovereignty dispute. Benjamin Samson and Eran Sthoeger, Esq. report on the innovative 2021 treaty between Honduras and Nicaragua establishing maritime boundaries on both sides of the Central American isthmus: a gap filler in the Caribbean Sea to complete the work of the ICJ in 2007 and a line extending into the Pacific Ocean starting at the tri-state closing line of the Gulf of Fonseca. With thanks to De Gruyter Brill and American Society of International Law for continuing to support this publication, to International Mapping for the crisp, informative graphics and, most importantly, to the authors for their time, energy and expertise. https://lnkd.in/gkTxDhMC
