This past weekend wrapped up our attendance at the EU Open Source Policy Summit, where BigBlueButton was proud to be a Production Partner. It was an exciting event that brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and open source advocates to explore how open source is shaping Europe’s digital future. From open infrastructure and digital sovereignty to AI, public sector innovation, and collaborative standards, the conversations highlighted the growing role open source plays in building resilient, transparent, and competitive digital ecosystems. BigBlueButton powered the live stream for the event, helping extend these important discussions beyond the room. The stream peaked at 154 concurrent users, with a total of 207 attendees joining online to follow and engage with the sessions. Thank you to the organizers, speakers, and everyone who joined remotely and in person to make this a meaningful and impactful event. I'm currently in Brussels attending the EU Open Source Policy Summit 2026, hosted by OpenForum Europe. It's a major event with over 250 participants. The theme here is powerful: how EU member states, open source projects, and commercial companies can work together build a strategic and sustainable foundation for digital sovereignty. One of the panels "Europe as the World's Home for Open Source" brought together voices from Red Hat, the European Commission, Drupal, the Open Source Initiative, the European Open Source Academy, and the Apache Software Foundation. The message is clear: digital sovereignty isn't just about where your data sits, it's about controlling the policies, operations, and infrastructure around that data. Building a foundation based on open technologies is the way to achieve digital sovereignty. Blindside Networks, of which I am the CEO, is also providing the BigBlueButton server to broadcast the summit globally. Here in Canada, we're looking hard at increasing our digital sovereignty. In my opinion, Europe is leading the way. Five years ago, Blindside Networks has worked closely with the French Government to deploy an on-premise deployment of BigBlueButton for increasing interministerial collaboration across the government. With over 160,000 large meetings in the last 12 months alone, it now complements France's rollout of Visio for video conferencing. I have been managing the BigBlueButton open source project for 17 years now and it's going strong. Every person in the world deserves access to quality education. That's Sustainability Goal #4 from UNESCO: Quality Education. I've had the pleasure and opportunity to move the world a tiny bit closer to that goal through BigBlueButton. The project has seen over 100 developers having contributed 5 or more accepted pull requests. It's localized into 65 languages. And, with my CEO of Blindside Networks hat on, we've provided over 2B minutes of virtual classes to the world. It's the coolest thing I've ever done in my life. I wake up every day with one motto: the learning never stops. Every person in the world deserves access to quality education. And every educator deserves the best platform to deliver it.
