Thank you to Dr. Nesime Tatbul for her presentation at the BIFOLD Colloquium. After a warm welcome by BIFOLD co-director Prof. Dr. Volker Markl, Dr. Tatbul gave a deep dive into one of today's most critical challenges in large-scale software systems: observability. Her talk, "Scalable Data Management and Analytics for Modern Observability," highlighted that managing observability data involves handling massive volumes of heterogeneous time series under tight resource constraints. Efficient time-oriented queries are essential for troubleshooting. Dr. Tatbul is a Senior Staff Research Scientist at Intel, based at MIT, where she oversees Intel's university research programs on data systems and AI. Her work in data stream systems, time series analytics, and data management is widely recognized. She is an ACM Distinguished Member, an IEEE Senior Member, and a Trustee Emeritus of the VLDB Endowment. Memphis paper receives 2026 ACM SIGMOD Research Highlight Award The SIGMOD community honors the research of BIFOLD researchers Arnab Phani and Matthias Boehm. Their work on eliminating the inefficient reuse of intermediate computations across multi-backend machine learning systems addresses a key challenge at the intersection of data engineering and machine learning.
