It’s a time to recognize the strength, wisdom, and resilience that have carried our people through generations, and continue to guide us today. American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month began as a weeklong observance in 1986, established by Congress to recognize the significant role of Native peoples in shaping our nation. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a joint resolution expanding it to a month-long celebration each November, a tradition that continues today. As we celebrate, we remember the ancestors who walked before us and the future generations who will carry our cultures forward. Today we celebrate Seward's Day! Seward's Day is a holiday observed in the state of Alaska, commemorating the signing of the Alaska Purchase treaty on March 30, 1867. Named after William H. Seward, the U.S. Secretary of State who negotiated the acquisition, the treaty facilitated the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million.
