  • The Olympics are coming to town! We’re thrilled to share that St. Louis will be hosting soccer games as part of the LA28 Olympic Games. This announcement is particularly exciting for St. Louis as it signifies the return of Olympic games to the City. St. Louis originally hosted the Games in 1904, earning the status of being the first Olympic City in the United States. While a few things have changed since then, we know that these Games will showcase the absolute best of our city! People will be traveling from around the world to experience our food, our culture, and our community. We can’t wait to welcome them! More details will be announced this spring regarding what type of soccer games we’ll be hosting (men’s, women’s, or both) and the timeframe. Registration is open for the LA28 Olympic Ticket Draw now through March 18 on la28.org. Meet us in St. Louis! 💛

  • Yesterday, the St. Louis African American Aldermanic Caucus hosted a flag-raising event to celebrate Black History Month. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Black History Month, and the Pan-African flag will hang in Washington Park for the rest of the month to honor the holiday. Mayor Spencer stated that “Black History Month serves not only as a time of reflection and remembrance, but also as a call to action, to educate, uplift, and recommit ourselves to building a city where opportunity is equitable, history is truthfully told, and the contributions of Black residents are recognized and celebrated year-round.” Happy Black History Month!

  • Snow removal update: Street Department and contractor crews continue plowing and applying ice-melting chemicals, which we expect will have a bigger effect with the sun out for several hours today, helping us melt snow and ice that plows alone can’t get. We have begun opening some lanes through residential streets, though arterials, secondaries and hill routes remain the top priority. Snow routes have been plowed and treated with ice-melting chemicals at least once, but more work remains to get all of them in good condition. As this work progresses, we will increasingly shift to opening residential streets over the next 24-48 hours. If possible, please park off the street to help us with this effort. To give our crews the best conditions to get this done as quickly as possible, please continue to avoid travel if possible. If you must travel, give our snowplows plenty of time and space to work.

  • Our hard-working city crews continue to work 12-hour shifts to make arterials, secondaries and hill routes passable. With about 9 inches of snow and very cold temperatures for the next several days, we know the next 24-48 hours are critical. That's why we prepared to bring in contractors ahead of the storm, and we have now activated those contracts, roughly doubling our fleet. The contractors are embedded in the Street Department effort, which continues to focus first on arterials, secondaries and hill routes. Now that the snow has subsided, our crews are working to fully clear the snow routes without new snow falling behind them. The added capacity of contracted support for this dangerous combination of snow and severe cold will help us accelerate our cleanup efforts. We expect significantly better road conditions by Tuesday afternoon, if not sooner. Once snow routes are in good condition, our Street Department and contractors will move to residential streets to ensure they are passable and that the next week of continuously freezing weather doesn't result in ice becoming a major issue. This is a true team effort to get the streets in the city opened as quickly as possible.

The City advises residents to avoid travel to allow the Street Department room to work. Residents should reduce exposure to the outdoors due to the extreme cold. If you or anyone needs shelter, call 211 to get connected to services. Stay safe, St. Louis!
