Victory at Saratoga saved America's Revolution and changed the world.

About us

In the fall of 1777, two armies clashed on the fields of Saratoga in upstate New York, marking a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. The Continental Army under the charge of General Horatio Gates, supported by state militias, native allies, and including hundreds of freed slaves, faced off against British General John Burgoyne and his forces. The outcome of this battle would not only determine the fate of the American Revolution but also change the course of world history. The Battles of Saratoga were a series of engagements that took place from September 19th to October 7th, resulting in a siege and the first-ever surrender by a British army on the field of battle on October 17, 1777. The American victory at Saratoga was a turning point in the Revolutionary War, as it convinced France to ally with the United States, substantially aiding the eventual victory over the British. Today, the legacy of the Battles of Saratoga continues to inspire Americans and people around the world to fight for freedom, justice, and democracy. • During the American Revolution, days of thanksgiving were declared to recognize moments of extraordinary significance. After General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga in October 1777—a true turning point in the war—the Continental Congress, inspired by this victory, recommended the first national day of thanksgiving. General George Washington proclaimed it for December 18, 1777. A historic marker still stands at the site where Congress met to issue this proclamation, naming Saratoga directly in its text—a reminder that the national tradition of Thanksgiving is deeply rooted in our region’s history. Happy Thanksgiving from Saratoga250. #Thanksgiving #Saratoga250 #AmericanHistory #RevolutionaryWar #Saratoga1777 #Gratitude #Heritage #TurningPoint

On October 17, 1777, 248 years ago today, British Lieutenant General John Burgoyne surrendered his entire army of about 6,000 men to American Major General Horatio Gates. After several days of intense negotiations, Burgoyne was able to secure favorable terms. The “Saratoga Convention” allowed Burgoyne’s army to return to England provided that they never return to fight the Americans. George Washington and the Congress while overjoyed at the great victory were appalled by the terms of the surrender. In the end, in one of the more unfortunate episodes of the war, the British and German prisoners would not be allowed to go home until the end of the war. Many died in captivity and many others deserted to ultimately become American citizens. The famous John Trumbull painting of the surrender hangs in the US Capitol rotunda and depicts the moment Gates graciously declined Burgoyne’s sword. The news of the stunning American victory reverberated around the world especially in London and Paris, and the triumph changed the very character of the war and ultimately guaranteed American independence.   #thecompleatvictory #compleatvictory #saratogacampaign #battleofsaratoga

  • Constitution Day is September 17 — a moment to reflect on the document that framed our nation. But here’s the hidden story: without Saratoga, we may never have had a Constitution at all. In 1776, the Declaration boldly proclaimed independence—but the war that followed nearly broke the new United States. By 1777, Britain was confident it could cut the colonies in two by seizing the Hudson River corridor. The outcome at Saratoga changed everything. ⚔️ The American victory at Saratoga: Secured French ships, troops, and treasure for the Patriot cause. Revived morale at home and silenced skeptics abroad. Ensured the Revolution survived long enough to reach 1783—and true independence. Only after winning independence did Americans have the opportunity to craft a constitutional republic—a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.” So as we honor Constitution Day, remember: from the Declaration to the Constitution, Saratoga was the essential turning point that gave America the chance to shape its destiny. #Saratoga250 #ConstitutionDay #AmericasTurningPoint #VictorySeason #SaratogaHistory
