Note: First published in Cosmopolitan (New York), November 1906.
Synopsis: Three soldiers are stationed as lookouts. Two of them report that the third has become frightened and run away. But then they see that man standing in the road waving the troops back. The next day, it becomes clear that he saved them from an ambush and has been killed (it isn't clear whether before or after he waved them back).
