Note:
Translated by Alice Stronach and G. B. Jacobi from the Danish of Amalie Skram
"A Dream of Death" is not credited in the 1898 anthology, merely annotated "From the Danish" in the Contents list and at the head of the story.
This is a very short excerpt from a translation first published a few months later, in March 1899 evidently from a publisher's advertisement. That is the first English-language translation of the non-genre novel Professor Hieronimus (1895); namely Professor Hieronimus (John Lane: The Bodley Head, 1899). It's from the middle of untitled Chapter III, pp. 27-29 (viewed at HathiTrust).
Page numbers reported in The Supernatural Index suggest that the 1981 anthology contains a longer excerpt, or some editorial framing, or both.
Synopsis:
A woman experiences a vivid dream after falling asleep at her easel.
Evidently this precedes Else Kant's first visit, "going into the hospital to be under Professor Hieronimus" (p. 24) in one of Amalie Skram's "mental hospital works ... which dealt with the primitive and brutal conditions of such institutions of the period. Her novels created a major stir in Denmark and precipitated improvements in these institutions." (Wikipedia)
