Note: This story has been sometimes published by itself and sometimes bracketed by a framing story about Kai Lung. It first appeared as chapter 1 of ''The Wallet of Kai Lung'' in 1900 with the framing story. It was then reprinted as a standalone chapbook as ''The Transmutation of Ling'' in 1911 (and then again in 1912), but it is not known whether the framing story was included. Finally, it was reprinted in Lin Carter's ''Great Short Novels of Adult Fantasy II'' in 1973 without the framing story.
