  • Publication: Voyages de Gulliver dans des contrées lointainesPublication Record # 557992
  • Author: Jonathan Swift
  • Date: 1841-00-00
  • Publisher: H. Fournier
  • Pages: xl+580
  • Format:
hc?Hardcover. Used for all hardbacks of any size.
  • Type: NOVEL
  • Notes:
    • Introduction by Walter Scott; afterword ("Postfacier") by Pierre-François Guyot Desfontaines. Desfontaines died in 1745, so it's unclear in what context he wrote this afterword. The WorldCat record here says "Includes an appendix with a passage from Desfontaines' translation of Gulliver's travels.", so Desfontaines might have been the earlier translator, from which this is a "new translation". The HathiTrust record, OCLC 589712697, says he is the translator of this edition. Since there is 93 years between his death and the first printing of this edition, that seems unlikely.
    • New translation ("traduction nouvelle"), but translator apparently uncredited.
    • Published as 2 volumes in one.
    • Most sources say "Illustrated by J.J. Grandville", some say woodcuts by various others "after Grandville". See the WorldCat records for this printing and the 1838 printing for details. 8 leaves of plates.
