Stated in the word from the editors: Many of the stories and poems are followed by "A Word from Zelazny" in which the author muses about the preceding work (sometimes only a few lines, sometimes several pages). Many of the works are also followed by a set of "Notes", explaning names, literary allusions and less familiar words (these entries also vary in length from a few lines to several pages). In fact the “A Word from Zelazny”, and the “Notes” sections were compiled and written by Christopher S. Kovacs. The "A Word from Zelazny" sections quote Zelazny from correspondence, interviews, essays etc. Some of the poems are part of a story, but are mentioned separately on the TOC, with a page number following the story. The page numbering of the TOC is then followed. The contents page drops the first "The" from "The Doctrine of the Perfect Lie".
