The ''Analytical Laboratory'' award is the annual readers' poll conducted by Astounding/Analog magazine to determine the favorite stories, articles, and cover art published each year. The name derives from a monthly feature created by John W. Campbell in 1938, a poll of each issue's stories to determine which writer would receive a bonus payment. The monthly feature was abandoned in 1976 after Campbell's death, then revived as an annual poll by Stanley Schmidt in 1979. Given for publication years from 1978 to the present. On 3 occasions during the 1950's, Astounding (later "Analog") did polls of the readers' all time favorite books. Serials had a separate category from 1978-1981. William Bainbridge (http://mysite.verizon.net/wsbainbridge/dl/anlab.htm) has demonstrated that annual awards for 1938 to 1976 could be re-constructed from the monthly awards, but these were not done by either Analog or Bainbridge, and are not included here.
