  • Informative and well presented

Tim Marlow does an excellent job of presenting the artists and their works in historical context, pointing out at each juncture why and how they are innovative and important. My only complaint is that he butchers the Italian language (e.g., Cimabue and chiaroscuro). Can't have everything.

  • Incredible.

This documentary is perfect. It gives us Beethoven's music and the man, going into the composer's life through the music. I wish someone would continue this work for Mahler, Verdi, Schubert, et al. Fabolous concept: tracking the composer and the heart of the works through a virtuoso who is steeped in them. This is a beautiful piece of work, and I feel that I know Beethoven and these concerti so much more intimately now. I'm grateful.

  • Worth watching, with a forgiving eye

Love that there's a series centered on ballet. Pretty good acting, which is wonderful and almost shocking, considering a number of dance-focused movies I can think of. I'm still in episode 5, so can't speak to the latter episodes, but I will say: beware of histrionic monologues in the third and fourth episodes. It's like watching the newbie actors audition. These monologues (you'll know them when you see them) are not subtly nuanced performances, and they made me cringe. The fault must lay with bad writing and self-indulgent directing. Hopefully the rest of the series does not repeat the melodrama. Outside of those annoying bits, the show is absolutely watchable.
