A bit freaky and dark. Sex drugs and rock and roll in post WWI. Everyone is unhinged. There is a blend of realism with artistic licence IE hyper stylistically quasi fantasy. Even to the point of modernising the characters rather than reimagined them as quaint and 'so in the past'. The first episode seems to focus on character woes and opposites... We are clearly set up to see a rise of the abused and tossed aside women into forces to be reckoned with. For me personally it could tone down the artsy stylistic liberties and 'keep it real, yo' a bit more. But as of eps 1 I will tune in further. I gave it a 7 but it was close to an 8.
I gave it a 7 out of respect that it entertained so many viewers and dared to be intentionally creative but for me personally it was closer to a 6 rating. For all it's trippy, cosmic and far out themes the visuals were not at all sublime and glorious. So much of it was not to my liking and I am a fan of weird and psychedelic and bizarre. The acting was too campy which is fine for goofy none serious films but I felt like it was a children's Saturday morning green slime show. The wide eyed Chinese speaking in broken engwish (sic). Evil characters like in a children's school pantomime play, yuck. An early fight scene celebrated the 'heroes' attacking security guards violently. The guards were in the right and doing nothing wrong. Just trying to protect other innocent people yet we, the viewers, are supposed to applaud them being violently assaulted by the heroes. Disgusting, abhorant, dehumanising, numbing people to how horrible acts of violence are. Don't get me wrong, depicting violence is a powerful and necessary thing in storytelling but I can not simply go along due to the reasons previously stated. So for all this films praise of human emotions seeping through the storyline... I couldn't disagree more. This film glorified indiscriminate violence towards innocent people while posing as a humanitarian work of art. Really bad.
I was not disappointed with the series ending. Too many shows I've loved ended poorly in my opinion. Love/Hate ended with a bang...pun intended. Most of the story lines were delt with satisfactorily for me. Sure, a few minor story lines were not fully resolved but unless everyone dies then that's just how it is. Things get a bit messy and the pace accelerated to get everything in. I enjoyed the series so much that there was a sense of mourning that I'd come to the end. Okay, I have very slight reservations about the whole 'Nidge going to Spain ' storyline. I get working with someone in Spain and meeting the head honcho face to face but....
