This was a magnificent performance by most of the actors. There are a few glaring exceptions (notably, Florence Pugh, whose performance degrades the entire enterprise) but for the most part, this is a truly excellent film. The musical score is really just not very good. The music is so tense throughout the film, there is no build up to the climax. I really dislike the music that accompanies the film. Wow, Hans Zimmer could have done such a magnificent job on the music for this film. I wish Mr. Nolan had used him for the musical score. It would have made a much better film, in my opinion. Other than these rather minor criticisms, I found the film magnificent. Bravo Mr. Nolan, Mr. Murphy, Ms. Blunt, Mr. Damon, and Mr. Downey.
This is a far more engaging story than the one portrayed in the "novel." I read the book and I believe that it is 90% fiction. It's categorized as fiction and I'm confident that is exactly what it is. Do yourself a huge favor and save yourself from the long, tortuous slog through the book. The author portrays himself as the hero of his own story. It's really quite offensive and shows such great immaturity, that I feel sorry for him. Full stop. If the very high level outline of the book is true, the author is nothing more than a petty, immature and selfish criminal. Charlie Hunnam plays a much more sympathetic person that the author of the book. I slogged through the entire pathetic book and was worse off for it. This series is very enjoyable and thankfully, departed from the awful book in all the right ways. Bravo Apple+ TV. I wish you had not cancelled this series after one season.
This is hard to warm up to, I admit, but hang in there. It is totally worth your time. I had a difficult time caring about any of it for at least the first 3 episodes but as the story (and its premise) is further revealed in subsequent episodes, I found that I never wanted it to end! A surprising and utterly charming film. The different languages really enhance the experience so I encourage viewers to just read the subtitles to get the full "flavor" of the series. I was not familiar with any of these actors but I certainly am now. I will follow their careers with great interest. Not even one actor hit a false note. Don't miss this one!
