I don't write a whole lot of reviews but this movie really surprised me and is worth mentioning. I was expecting a cheap and bloody production to pass some time, yet this exceeded expectations. There actually is more heart to the story, and not too much violence, and in a good way. Yes, blood will be shed, but tears as well. The finale showdown(s) don't follow a typical hollywood mold, yet fit in with the theme. Revenge, redemption, courage, and family are all treated equally. If there's one criticism, there is some overacting on the part of the primary bad guy, however this is compensated by overall strong performances.
Possibly could get better reviews if it were publicized and re-directed as a drama, but even in that case Im not sure it would be mediocre. It was not scary, sentimental, or touching. I was seriously considering turning it off after half an hour but I like Michael Shannon, and his Boo Radley-ish character was intriguing. Not only the script and the direction were bad, but the editing and cinematography were amateurish, you don't need shot/reverse shot in nearly every scene. Many others commented on the crying baby and I agree it was annoying to the point of using the mute button. Maybe the only redeeming feature was the ending, which did at least leave me in a good mood, so that raised it from a 1 to a 2.
