The character development of the new chief character was interesting to a degree, but even that ended up being cliché. And the evidence text sobbing over a breakup was annoying, not cute. But what annoyed me about this episode? Is that unlike the usual twist and turns that keep it interesting and distinguish alert as a unique take on the cop procedural, this one ended in a whole string of clichés that we've seen 1 million times before. It just wasn't that interesting. The show has twisted the cop genre in a way that I really enjoyed, but this episode was not up to par. Lack of originality in the writer's room is to blame.
I think the rookie has made a tradition out of doing these interview type documentary episodes because it saves the money as the show gets older and the cost of more expensive but this is so bad as a rookie episode. It's just not what fans are looking for in my experience and what I'm looking for. The only thing worse would be the flashback episode that reruns footage from previous episodes. But they even do a little bit of that in these episodes sometimes. This is the kind of episode where you can basically multitask and watch it in the background and you won't miss anything. These will not be the episodes this series is remembered for.
