This is a great story, very reminiscent of shows like the Sopranos, Shameless, etc. I love the character development in Season 3, though I'm not sure taking an entire episode to do this for each character was necessary. I think there is an over use of the words "f*@!" and "like," which dumbs it down a bit and makes it feel less "real-life." While I love cooking shows and competitions, and it's fun to see celebrity chefs on the show, some of the writing is too much like reality TV. That said, there is some AMAZING acting by Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Jamie Lee Curtis, Abby Elliot, and Chris Witaske, among others. I look forward to Season 4!!!
Is this "based on a true story" or copying WACO? I'm confused. If it is base on a true story, this film could have been so much better...cinematography, soundtrack, etc. I love the male actors in this film. I love the scenery.. except it is not the Pacific Northwest. The subject matter is disturbing, but relevant. This film is supposed to be set in the Pacific Northwest. There are no scenes that look like Seattle or nearby Pacific Northwest. Canada, yes! Some great actors but poor script. Still, I have respect for Jude Law, Tye Sheridan, and Nicholas Hoult. Great, solid actors who have done amazing films and shows. They did the best with what they had, but their talent was grossly misused.
As a mental health counselor who sees a lot of domestic and family abuse and violence, I thought this was a beautiful tribute to the empowerment and bravery of someone caught up in this kind of situation. Anna Kendrick did a wonderful job, as did her co-stars. Not in your face or over-dramatic, but realistic. However, it would have been even better if there was a strong, knowledgeable male advocate character. Abuse has no gender, race or socio-economic boundary. And it is not just physical or sexual. Support is out there!! It breaks my heart that the burden of proof is on the victim, not the perpetrator. This is NOT OK!!!! As the quote goes, "If you see (or hear) something, say something! Even as a mandatory reporter things get twisted but the more we speak up the better!
