After finally getting to see the 1971 version I think two things I know why people hated on the remake with Stallone & dang for this time period I bet this movie was flagged for some of the content. This movie is plain and simple just perfect in the revenge noir. It starts a tad slow but it is building up character backgrounds a little but is well worth it. This flick has fooled from start to finish even though you think your on track. Caine is great as a gangster with no regrets for what he is or what he's done ever. There's just one rule don't mess with a man's family especially a bad man. He doesn't take kindly to the misfortunes of his brother who has lived a good & truthfull life,or you will have to pay the price.
First off don't listen to all the haters giving this movie a bad review. If your looking for a "Shoot Em Up" British gangster movie go watch Get Carter(1971) or a Rambo movie. But if you want to see a great movie with a dark plot and the main character being the darkest then this is for you. Will(Clive Owen) is a evil man with a dark past of nothing but regret for all the pain he has brought people in their lives and also his. He has pretty much left everyone & everything that had anything to do with his past, even his family that he has quit writing or trying to contact them at all as it has been three years since someone have any heard from him. He has taken up in what seems to be some sort of park or forest with van he is living out of & also working on the same grounds. His brother Davey is involved in dealing drugs just really a low level dealer. But some events happen to him that leaves him in a bad state. So Will(Clive Owen) is fired from his job not by the foreman but must be the company owner who finds out that they have ex gangster working for them as logger. Will has decided to leave and try o go further away from his past as he glances in a terminal building and sees what seems to be his brother Davey inside, but as Will stops his van to rush into the terminal their is no Davey. Will then sensing something is wrong to Davey tries to call him for days but can't reach him,and thats when it starts to get good as Will has to return home to see Davey. Thats all I'm going to say as anymore could ruin it with a spoiler. Clive Owen is A+++ as he doesn't even crack a smile once the entire movie. Like I said this isn't a shoot em up, but it has violence scenes this more of a story & character movie.
