Well, since I first created this 'Bio' in 2006, I thought it time to update it since so many things have changed quite drastically in the movie/physical media realm. This probably has a date on it, but if not I am updating this in 2024-10-25. Since 2006, we have had the advent of Blu-rays, and now 4k Blu-rays, with just about bloody EVERYBODY streaming EVERYTHING!

I have been collecting movies for over 40 years now. The very first ones were in BETA (yes, BETA... 😁) then VHS and eventually about the turn of the century DVDs and finally Blu-rays when they began to be 'The' format. I've chosen not to go 4k though. Although I do have a nice, reasonably priced 50" telly that upscales everything very nicely. I have a VERY old OPPO Blu-ray player, the very first of their 'High End' line (BDP-83) I've had it serviced a few times by OPPO and it is still playing just fine. In reading many of the complaints and troubles of some of the 4k players and discs, and being perfectly happy with the excellent picture quality I have now, I decided not to transition to the 4k world. If I get 'Ahold' of 4k Blu-ray files I use software to convert them to HD 1080 Blu-rays which works just fine. Between movies and series (each full series counting as '1') I have over 9600 titles.

I also even more avidly have collected vinyl records for the same period of time. I have over 2600 albums on vinyl, many original pressings from when they came out, and also high quality 'Audiophile' pressings of some of my favourite albums. I have probably around 8000 albums in FLAC (lossless) stored on mirrored multiple HDDs, so I've been doing this awhile... 😊

I've also designed a website over many years just for fun that has many different areas of interest, including some of my poetry and a music section where I have several pages describing different Genres and provide samples of each one. I also have a Google Folder with pictures and detailed descriptions of my SOUNDROOM SYSTEM & COLLECTIONS. So, please feel free to take a look at any of these if you wish to do so:

  • Intriguing idea, even with some nice atmosphere, but ultimately rather disjointed and incoherent...

    Don't get me wrong... I usually don't mind movies that are ambiguous or vague (David Lynch anyone...? : ) But, in this case I think that what they did is take a fairly intriguing idea and just didn't develop it very well.

    Pierce Brosnan (isn't that the greatest name ever!) is of course very striking as he always is. And, the idea of the spirits of the Intuits is great. But, perhaps the way it was written, IDK... Certainly John McTiernan is a brilliant director with films like 'DIE HARD' and 'PREDATOR' for Goodness sakes! But, maybe his heart just wasn't in this one, or maybe due to the Psychedelic imagery in this one he may have been indulging in some pharmacological 'help', IDK...

    But, ultimately I feel that there is just too much padding and stretching out of the scenes for no reason (other than to fill running time, which still comes in at about 1:34) There is some nice imagery and lighting, like some of the Bava-esque lighting in the old church or whatever that was. And, I liked the use of the hard rock guitars and the soundtrack in general, I thought it fit the mood well.

    To me, it just doesn't seem quite to work and come together in a strong narrative or very compelling to the audience. It's like there are cool scenes here and there, but again there is a lot of Ott 'Acting' and overdone 'Drama' that doesn't really contribute to the story.

    There just isn't very much really holding this story together other than a pretty good concept. Don't know why McTiernan couldn't do more with it, maybe his hands were tied to some extent since he had not done those other two Huge movies quite yet until the next year.

    So, I really can't recommend this one and I don't think it really comes together as a good story overall, which is a shame because it kind of throws away what could have been a rather intriguing movie. So, for me it is a middling '5'...

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Just a note as to how I do my reviews... I usually don't repeat the basic plot since almost everyone else does that and you can get that from the synopsis and a bunch of other places. So, what I concentrate on in my reviews is hopefully putting across whether I think it is a Good film, or if I think that it is an Entertaining movie and what I feel it's strengths and weaknesses are in the way it is made.
    That way, Hopefully it will be of more benefit and actual help to others as to whether I feel it is worth watching (and also perhaps what 'Type' of film it is and what type of people may enjoy it)
    My Particular Way of Rating:
    5 - Flawed, but perhaps with a little entertainment value here and there for some.
    6. A decently passable story maybe worth a watch.
    7. A solid film, well made, effective, and entertaining.
    And, obviously, you can probably figure out what above and below these would mean... : )
  • Oh yes! This shows how an excellent low budget film can be made with cleverness and intelligence. And, quite an entertaining one at that!
    Well, I can see right off that many high star reviews are mysteriously downvoted. Don't really understand why some people seem to enjoy doing that. That is one reason I felt more compelled to leave a review despite there already being many here.
    Anyway, as you can clearly tell by my Extremely Rare '9' rating, that I absolutely and completely enjoyed this movie!
    As I say in my title, this is a Perfect example of how to make a very intelligent, captivating, and quite clever little Science Fiction film with very little, especially concerning the very commonplace subject now of A I, and put it together in such a way, to me anyway, that I feel is absolutely brilliant!
    Not only is the premise very intriguing, but in less capable hands this Really could have come across as very bland and stupid. But, do not fear, they did a fantastic job in crafting a story that gradually and quite effectively builds tension and a great sense of Mystery with some really nice twists and turns along the way.
    I truly cannot say enough about this beautifully made little film. But, whomever the Filmmakers are, they show some genuinely profound talent and I honestly cannot wait to see what they come up with.
    Basically, if you don't mind a very low key, but extremely clever and well made Science Fiction film and can appreciate serious, 'Hard' Sci Fi movies that don't necessarily have much in the way of effects or action, then you should absolutely enjoy this one!
  • Strange, definitely Offbeat, but fantastic, extremely Surreal and fascinating Horror. Absolutely one of a kind...
    This is most definitely a Very different type of Horror movie. That cannot be overstated whatsoever...
    First off... If you prefer a more linear, clearly understandable narrative in your Horror films then definitely give this one a pass.
    But... if you love really 'Out There', extremely offbeat and very Surreal films like I totally love, then you should very much find this one quite entertaining.
    Right from the first scene you will be able to tell if this movie is for you. I won't give anything away, but from the very beginning when you see the person holding this kind of 'Divining Rabbit' (and it is a Super Creepy looking rabbit!) where something in the walls is causing it to shake itself in a very animated way, you will have an excellent idea as to what kind of Horror movie this is... :D
    Personally for me, this is Absolutely up my very imaginative and quite Surreal alley, Bigtime! I frigg'n Love stuff like this and you don't see films like this very often. And when filmmakers do Try to create something like this, it is rarely this well done and effective. Think David Lynch after dropping either ecstasy or acid, your choice.
    Obviously, I feel that If you like this kind of very Way Out There and Surreal type of Horror film, then like me you likely will find it quite entertaining. Most Highly Recommended and fully deserving a very rare '8' rating.
