If all you're looking for in a horror/slasher movie is a lot of gore and a scary killer, then you're gonna love Terrifier.
Art the Clown is a really scary character, and he's played wonderfully by David Howard Thornton. His miming and facial expressions are downright horrifying at times, and his design is great. He is the real highlight and, along with the practical special effects, the only redeeming quality of this movie.
Every other character falls somewhere between amateur or porno-level acting. They are written in the most bizarre ways ranging from comical to downright infuriatingly ignorant and stupid.
It's not self-aware about it either. The way the opening and ending scenes are set up, it tries to be something more than it is but it ends up making no sense at all.
The cinematography is very flat and dull and middle-of-the-road, but it's not bad. What is bad, however, is the editing, which really takes away from some of the movie's best scenes, the kills.

It is so out there and keeps going over the top more and more, to the point where the dated and special effects and bad acting and the fact that it's shot like a Japanese commercial all work in its favor.
The dizzying ADHD editing, the bizarre tonal shifts that happen a moment's notice, the fact that the girls haven names like Fantasy, Melody, and Kung-Fu, or that the movie basically abandons its plot halfway through and turns into a fever dream -- it all reminds me of early Youtube Poop's.
In a lesser movie this would be a negative but the fact that it is almost 50 years old now makes it utterly fascinating. It was far ahead of its time and they didn't even know it. Hausu is an absolute must watch for any lover of cinema. It is truly one of a kind and deserves its place in history. Even if you end up finding it obnoxious and irritating, you will remember this movie for the rest of your life.
