To begin with, the film was made in 1980 not 81 as some suggest. It was released on UK VHS in 1982 & clearly states this in the copyright details printed.
Based on a novel by Gary Brandner from 1977, there are some subtle changes to the script which does depart from the original story.
Dee Wallace's character a TV news reporter is traumatized after a meeting in a porn shop with Robert Picardos serial killer. Following advice & therapy from a psychiatrist, she is persuaded with her husband to attend a Californian retreat which she is unaware is inhabited by werewolves. On a par with An American werewolf in London which many consider the better film but both have some great & outstanding transformation special effects & have definitely stood the test of time. The books are definitely worth getting ( I have them) but ignore the abysmal & unrelated sequels..pure rubbish!!!!
