I am surprised to read so many negative reviews. The tv series proposal is not perfect and far away from being very good, but it is entertaining and the script holds up very well.
The script has several interlinked stories which are correctly tied up. Also, the different timelines of the script are well managed providkng insights of the core story.
The cast crew could have been better selected.

Great movie Pedro!!!
Volver is by far one of the best movies of Almodovar. The way he narrates the story with the camera is just perfect: gently and with character. You will see how feelings and emotions are driven smoothly by a great group of actresses (Penélope does a GREAT job along with Carmen Maura) which perfectly understand what the director wants to deliver and how to do it.
It is another of those twisted bitter stories of life that Almodovar knows well and enjoys developing and producing them. Don't miss it.
One side note: I read that Penélope had to place some cushion to make her rear bigger according to the character!!

The movie itself does not impress very much as the actors do not perform very well and it has a big stereotype on the back (young USA kids who go to Europe for sex, drugs and fun) which is difficult to swallow. Thinking about what I just wrote down, I realize that the script starts with a stereotype (above) and ends up with something fresh, the idea that it can actually happen nowadays. Something else to take into account, is that male actors performance (specially Jay Hernandez) is kind of poor and with a hero sort of looking which does not match very well.
You will have to watch it and find it out by yourself, I don't want to spoil it for you.
