At one point Aronofsky was the heir to Scorsese's urban king of conflict and mayhem with maybe more psychology and less violence. His Noah was certainly an odd turn. He lost me with The Whale. Caught stealing is passable entertainment although it has a pretty high body count for a comedy. Anyway as all the other commenters have elaborately covered the story and plot and cast I'll point out it was adapted from a novel and it LOOKS like it. I'm willing to go out on a limb and bet this movie is way better than the similar sounding One Battle After Another, a comedy(?), starring a humorless Leonardo DiCaprio. He's as earnest as Tom Cruise in comedy scenes and that usually kills them. You've been warned.
I would have passed on this but ended up taking my grandson. He liked it. I would call it a CGI cartoon but it's more of a mosaic. A lot of intricate parts that fit together to give a big picture, the whole experience. Nothing of substance but an experience for the undiscriminating. The cast makes it work. As others have noted kudos to Nicholas Hoult for providing the spine that allows this soggy invertebrate to stand upright.
