When a controversial file critic makes his own short film it's very easy to gleefully point out every shortcoming without giving him a fair shake.
Agreed, the dialogue not very original, there are a bunch of cliches and tired tropes, etc but this is a critic with the stones to put his money where his mouth is. I have seen much worse from more experienced writers with much bigger budgets. This film won't blow your mind, it's a proof of concept only. However, given the low budget, this film is of surprising quality. The villains are pretty low-rent, generic Eastern European types with bad accents and generally I wasn't a fan of the casting choices, but balancing that out the combat sequences were very good. But a PSA for other writers of action movies, at this is just a pet peeve of mine, when the hero gets shot in the shoulder it's not something that can be brushed off. It's devastating and ruins the arm and is often still fatal.
This was never going to be a Jack Ryan story, though it's of that type. It's establishing that we don't need to rely on hollywood for their largely unwatchable, safe offerings. So while not a massive fan of this one, I applaud the effort and I think it's a worthy mission.
