Only in Mommy Dearest has the line "Jesus Christ" been so abysmally scripted and delivered. The scene with the assistant doing the "duuuuh I guess this is weird, so weird" investigating the doctor's office Was SO badly written and acted I almost turned off. Then comes the slow, stunted acting between Julia and Dr Channing, no narrative, nothing to keep the interest. Every line of dialogue and action by a character is meaningless and dull, or included simply for shock effect. I couldn't carry on, life's too short. Reading other reviews I'm certain I'm not missing anything in the rest of the film.
What a massive let down.
What a massive let down.
Stupid decision after stupid, illogical decision. Terrible one dimensional dialogue and non-characters, clichés, massive lulls where nothing keeps the attention. And yes, the inflated, collagen (or not) lip of the lead actress are very distracting. I'd all of the casting is unsuccessful except pinhead.
The effects are good, but even then, many scenes are too slow and dimly lit to be frightening. The cenobites are hardly ever shown properly, but it's not scary, it's just frustrating. When they are revealed, there's lots of bad cgi. It's boring and forgettable. I wish film makers would make an effort and go old school. Look at how effective the lack of cgi is in Terrifier 3, just do it properly or don't bother.
The characters are annoying, so you don't care what happens to them. I'm sure this is due to bad writing, as the genre suffers greatly from this and surely nobody would want their audience to be devoid of sympathy for their protagonists.
They never learn do they!
Just watch the original.
