I do not understand what this movie was supposed to be. It's not a Santa flick. It lacks the wit and polish of Tim Allen's "The Santa Clause". It lacks the sharm and guile of "Miracle on 34th Street". It doesn't have the joy of "It's a Wonderful Life". It's not aimed at kids who believe in Santa. At 124 minutes you won't hold their attention that long plus there are some pretty dark sequences, (and I don't mean poorly lit.). There's not enough laughs to make it a comedy. There's not enough action to be an action film. There' a couple of nice gimmicky special effects but it's not sci fi. So what is it? Now I like J. K. Simmons, but Santa? Nooooooo! And athletic Santa? Please! This movie is a shocking waste of acting talent, and a mishmash of ideas which only seem designed to extract some christmas dollars from your wallet!
Like many I suppose, I had only known Brie Larson from Marvel (a character which annoyed me. I had seen her in room, but I watched the first show of this series thinking my wife might like it. Brie Larson gives an incredibly nuanced performance of the character. Finally we really get to see Brie's acting chops! A wonderful series and set of characters. Surprising and delicate but gently powerful. Of course Brie is not the only character and my wife and I have loved the unfolding and peeling back og the layers the main characters have built in their lives as a means of protecting themselves from the pains of their past. Even the small perfomances of support characters like Elizabeth's brother are not just story fillers but an integral part of the weaving of the tale. A wonderful series well worth watching!
I love the Mad Max trilogy. Was very disappointed by Fury Road! My wife loves Chris Hemsorth. She growls when he comes on screen. So we had plenty to look forward to. Both of us had trouble staying awake during this and checked from about the 30 minutes to go mark. Lots of action and a better plot than Fury Road, but it alsmost seemed like so much time was spent on the action sequences there was not enough left for the plot. I said to my wife (during the first chapter) "That's the way! Do what the mother who is trying to save your life is telling you!" And that was about where it all fell apart for me. To my mind it was mindless and purposeless. I believe all of those involved are capable of much much better so that is what I expect!
