I really cannot understand the negativity around Robert DeNiros The Alto Knights project , unless it's a swipe at percieved arrogance of Mr DeNiros dual roles in what is an excellent , part historical documentary , part biography and part drama . Tom Hardy recieved plaudits for a similar portrayal of the Krays in the movie LEGEND but the critics ( professional and other ) seem to be lining up to knock down the real legend that is Robert DeNiro . The movie itself deserves 8 out of 10 for the best imitation of JOE PESCI ever . At times I thought it WAS Mr Pesci in the role . I couldn't help.wondering if he was meant to play the character but was unavailable or DeNiro simply drew upon previous collaborations as a basis for his portrayal .
I gave this 4 stars after the first few episodes and I am almost sorry I gave it such a high score . ONCE AGAIN devoid of any new ideas they have taken a very good foreign language , which , if I remember correctly was available on Channel 4s streaming service All4 in one of WALTER PRESENTS WORLD DRAMA great subtitled series. This was a poor poor copy ( with a lemon twist in the Scotch ) but the actors who stole the show were ALEXEJ MANVELOV who stole every scene ( a great actor with great screen presence who i have i have seen in many great foreign language series and deserves BIG TIME INTERNATIOAL / USA ROLES , which brings me to the fabulous KELLY MACDONALD who was given very few SCENES but stole them all . Mark Bonnar , a competent but over exposed actor, even with a wig , is so overly familiar it also detracts from the authenticity... " I SAW HIM LAST WEEK IN SOMETHING "
