After reading some of the caustic reaction to this movie from its debut in the 1970s, I had minimal expectations after ordering the DVD by mail order. But the film is actually quite good and authentic to a certain aspect of rural Irish life. Further, from a slow loping pace, it actually gets very tense and had me on the edge of my seat for the last portion of the movie. So it stands up as a thriller as well as a milestone for the Irish language.
This is a nicely done and insightful little movie.
There aren't too many original scripts but this is one. Hitler as a young man struggling with the concept of his artistry as a painter or his 'day job' as a political rabble-rouser and spy.
The film exposes the phoniness of anti-Semitism and the failed nature of Hitler's art with a unique and compelling voice. 100s of films tell us that the Holocaust was wrong.
This film actually SHOWS you why it was wrong from the get-go. The movie also shows you just how disturbed a young man Hitler was. Noah Taylor's depiction is brilliant in this regard. (Hitler had already been diagnosed as psychotic by an Army doctor prior to the setting of this movie.)
The portrayal of the conditions of Hitler's rise are well-done as well. Gritty, poor, devastated, and violent are the world in which this film is set. That's the way it was.

This movie satirizes reality TV through the prism of modern technology. As such it is contemporary yet plays on the age-old topic of boyfriends, girlfriends, and ex-girlfriends.
The first part is a little fast paced and seems like a play adapted to a screenplay. This is essentially a chick-flick by a woman writer. But like many first projects, the creativity and love just oozes off the screen. Guys can enjoy too this film too. So don't be put off by the first part the plot continuously weaves and gets more complex and the characters get better developed throughout the film. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll be touched. Holly Hunter's southern accent is a bit fake, but Britney Morgan's acting is great. A lot of the character acting is great.
