Biswapati Sarkar, just look at the number of shows this man has created with his masterful storytelling and screenplay. Nothing feels out of place in the show. Cinematography to acting to background score - everything blends into the story. The small tricks of making an insignificant event significant, at some point later, are not cliched.
A good story makes the viewers emotional without making the characters emotional. Kaala Pani's writing and direction will definitely give you that experience. The acting skills of Sukant Goel, Amey Wagh, Vikash Kumar needs special mention. Good to see Ashutosh Gowariker after so many years. If not for these shows, the acting skills of many of these so called failed Bollywood actors would have gone unnoticed for ever.
Thanks to netflix as I firmly believe Bollywood would never have backed up a project like this. A definite watch.

Amit sial runs the show on his back. He is slowly turning out to be an actor to watch out for. Be it the negative character of inside edge, jamtara or the side act of raid, a simple murder - he shines like a jem..
Story is okayishh, execution/editing is better than most of the average indian thrillers available on ott platforrms. Other than amit sial, no noteworthy performance by other actors - but that doesn't necessarily mean bad acting. They are not noteworthy - that is it.
Surprisingly, I found a beautiful song in the last episode. That's an added bonus for a thriller series.
Overall, watch it before getting into conclusion by reading reviews given by fanatics. You might find a decent show.

I rated this a 9 out of 10 because there is always space for improvement and certain parts of overacting. I initially thought of giving it a 8/10, but the number of 1star ratings it received is genuinely undeserving and thus given a 9 star. Did it quench my thirst as an Indian period drama? It certainly has.
I haven't read the original book by Vikram Seth. So I'm unable to comment if it's a good adaption or not. But as an independent TV series, it's refreshing, certainly pulling the bar a notch higher for other future Indian period dramas.
What I liked was the trademark Meera Niar'ish execution of long shots, along with beautiful classical music blending with the scenes, the uneventful events that sets the motion slow though the storyline isn't that slow in reality. It's a fresh antidote for hundreds of TV series on Netflix that attempts to turn every scene into a twist. The acting is good to perfect for every single character, leaving a few scenes of overacting. Special mention for Ishan Khattar for portraying volumes of expression in almost all dimensions of emotions. I loved that character of Mann. One of those characters that if you read in your childhood, you long to be. And of course the brilliant cinematography. The slow camera movements. It gives you time to breathe and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
What I didn't like was people from varied socio economic background speaking in English. That is something hard to digest. But then it's an adaption of an English novel, so there is nothing much to complain. Mahira kakkar as mother of Lata could have done better.
Revommendation: The series shows that there is good and bad in every community. It shows a time just after India's independence, that had Indian Muslims who stayed back at the time of separation believing India is their own country, and their Hindu neighbors who understood and respected that.
I recommend it to everyone to see that not very long ago there was a time when we loved our neighbors irrespective of their religion.
