I know, I know, as a gay man I was supposed to love this movie (just like I did the original). But sad to say, this remake is not very enjoyable.
They get credit for putting new twists on the plot vs. The original, but pacing is waaaaay too slow and it takes forever to get going. Quite honestly, there's very little humor. The first hour drags and is pretty boring, and it's not until the grandmother shows up that things get interesting. The grandmother, in fact, is the most interesting character in the entire movie. Dialogue is mundane and the few funny lines stand out simply because there are so few of them.
With all the talent they had on hand, this could've been so much better.

OK, so this is another show that shouldn't be judged by Western standards.
To American eyes, a couple of things might take some getting used to. The pace is often slow, the dialogue seemingly banal, and the subtitling awkward. Having a panel of five outside commentators is sometimes helpful, but just as often it's irritating (because some of the commentators themselves were kind of irritating, sorry).
But the fact that a show like this got made at all is a huge sign of progress. As an old gay man who is waaaaay too jaded, it was also refreshing, and a wake-up call, to see young gay men actually wanting to get to know each other and talk, instead of just jumping into the sack. I can only hope that Japanese LGBTQ teenagers who see this show will find it comforting, and maybe a revelation.
And Ikuo? Honey, if you ever need a sugar daddy...call me. :-)

What a huge mess.
Where to begin with this steaming pile of garbage? Perhaps with the band of mostly irritating, unlikeable characters whom you end up hoping will be killed off by whatever is out there causing mayhem? Not since Dakota Fanning in "War of the Worlds" have their been child characters you are more desperate to see wiped out by something anything, just to get their screen time to come to an end. Or perhaps it's the unexplained arrival of flamingos and deer, which somehow have become malevolent and carnivorous? Or the ending, which makes absolutely no sense, except to reinforce the fact that the most irritating of said child characters really IS just as annoying as you thought she was?
Julia Roberts does give a speech towards the end which explains why her character is so hateful, but you still wish she would have gotten eliminated by invaders or aliens, just to shut her up.
And to think I skipped watching 32 other items in my watchlist in order to watch this. Bleecccchh.
