  • Just okay. Trying to be a Korean GWTW

Just okay. I only watched the first 2 episodes. It is trying to be a Korean Gone With the Wind, it seems. The beginning is so similar. A spoiled noblewoman who is beautiful and adored by men and hated by women living at a time when Korea at the brink of war... and a rogue of a nobleman is intrigued by the beauty and mocking the call to war. However, this is not nearly as epic, sweeping or iconic as GWTW -- nor are are actors as interesting, at least the female character isn't (the male lead Namkoong Min does a good job). The female actress is trying too hard to be the selfish diva that needs to be taught some humility, and it comes out contrived... and the lead actress, while pretty, doesn't have the gorgeous look and presence needed for this character. I think Kim Yoo-jung could have done better in this role -- maybe Lee Se-young. If I watch the whole thing, I may change my rating, but right now, it is just so-so.

  • Far exceeded expectations -- good story and acting... made me laugh and cry

I was surprised the IMDb rating wasn't higher. This is one where you should watch it and decide for yourself. I didn't expect a lot, but it far surpassed my expectations and went quite a way beyond. The portrayal of someone coping with the loss of a loved one to cancer was spot-on. They also nailed the confused and messy state of attraction and love. The portrayal of family life and a conservative community? Also apt. Thought the lead actress' performance was especially good. If you're looking for a cheap woman-on woman-movie (which, admittedly, can have its benefits at times), this is mostly not it (there was one notably passionate encounter). If you want a drama punctuated with a bit of humor that will leave you wanting a big glass of red wine, this is it.
