  • Style over substance

As often with movies that focus on a very peculiar subject matter, it's tempting to rate the point of view of the narration on said subject rather than the film. So to get that out of the way, I found that the angle was interesting and certainly thought-provoking (although predictable) from a religious/philosophical perspective. As for the movie itself, the production is hard to fault: actors, dialogs and cinematography are all superb. My main issue is that the story (apparently from a book) lets you anticipate an exciting conclusion that will shed light on the million details you are being fed during more than two hours when in fact much of what happens bears little consequence on the overall plot. Watch it if you're interested in something a bit unusual and don't mind a wandering story.

  • Actually not bad!

I had expected the quintessential French 'Navet' (B-movie) and had signed up for that without much expectation. Yet I found myself positively surprised on numerous occasions. Enough to share that here anyway. The cast is pretty much only weathered French comedy actors and actresses with a very strong screen presence. So, in terms of acting, and unless you hate them in the first place, the movie does what it says on the tin. It's a bit let down by the writing at times and a lot of the jokes are, expectedly, on the cheesy side (also not exactly suitable for a young audience). As for the story, I found it gradually morphed into something subtler than I had anticipated and it even reminded me of a truly great French comedy which I won't name here by fear of spoiling this one. I would definitely recommend this film if you are full of prejudice about cruise ships and enjoy slightly silly comedies (speaking French probably helps).

  • Fun, original and deeper than I had thought

I don't speak the language (like many, I presume), so I hesitated with Wild Men, fearing I'd spend the whole film reading subtitles, which usually means missing out on the acting, facial expressions, and other visual details. Here, however, I really felt that it was all working beautifully, undoubtedly thanks to a well paced script and editing. I had a great time and despite the farcical nature of a few of the scenes (some of which are truly hilarious), the underlying stories of the protagonists are much deeper than you'd expect from the trailer. In hindsight, I think a strength of this film is that it knits a story that uses original aspects of the region (and not only the stunning nature and folklore but also how people interact with each other) while at the same time exploring universal themes that, to me at least, made it not only enjoyable but also deeply contemplative at times. I'll definitely watch it again!
