Most likely, it would have been greater without the 'clever' - yet predictable and common - ending. The film had built a strong and unique emotional and human background, and the 'detective' ending that was added changed its category and weakened it.
Also, the last scene probably created some confusion about the timelines and the hero's true fate. Up until that moment the feeling was that the hero was remembering this moment, however the narration did not return to the state of recollection, leaving unresolved doubts about the final state of the hero, which was important, since the two states had significant differences.

During the first half of the movie I was thinking that it could reach the Oscars. Then the second half came which turned the movie to a b-category comedy. I guess the poor script (or the overall idea) was the main cause.
Pity for De Niro's performance which was brilliant as long as the role allowed him.

Although it is a crime movie, I think the strongest axis of the movie is the relationship between father and son. Both roles are performed (by Travolta and Sheridan) in a very natural and convincing way and the movie leaves you with a warm and softly moving feeling
