It was an interesting view of a tumultuous time in US race relations history. Over the course of fifty years the main character saw major upheavals in the civil rights movement from the sidelines as The Butler for the president of the US of A.
The cast boasts many big names, award winners left right and centre. They all do a good job. The script was interesting, the conflicts boiled down to father-son and husband-wife relationship disputes rather than anything political. The political scene served as a backdrop for their personal struggles or sometimes played a key role as in the case of the Butler's son who was a major civil rights activist.
But overall the entire production seemed lacking. Whitaker's makeup from the very beginning looked very odd - almost as if this was a high school play. You could see the line where the wig goes on top. The sets varied from realistic to being shot in your relative's basement. And the storyline was OK with showing snippets of the interactions with presidents here and there but never lingered long enough to get a real sense of this butler's relationship with them.
Lots of promise. But it only delivered on some of it for me.

I wasn't expecting much from this movie. But it surprised me. The story (already well documented on this site) was not overly complex yet it did have some deeper themes about sacrifice, being enraptured by physical beauty and yet being hollow inside.
The hardest thing for me was that Princess Ying (Vicky Zhao) was supposed to be depressed about her facial scars - hidden by her golden mask. But I find her to be extremely attractive so to imagine her as some horrible ugly thing was hard to swallow. Even when she reveals her mask the scars don't look all that bad.
Actually all three main actresses were very attractive and did very well in their respective roles. The only minor complaint would be the wooden performance by the actor portraying the general. He livens up towards the end so I guess I'll give him a pass.
