  • Millennial Kids battles Xenomorphs

ALIEN: ROMULUS directed Fede Alvarez (EVIL, DON'T BREATHE) is a fitting film since the mixed reviewed ALIEN prequels PROMETHEUS (2012) and ALIEN: COVENANT (2017) directed by Ridley Scott.

My expectations were high. Watching the trailers and TV Spots. I watched it once on IMAX.

The film takes place between the events of ALIEN (1979) directed by Ridley Scott and ALIENS (1986). It tells the story of young colonists faced with a merciless parasite on a derelict space station. And they paid their lives for it as well.

The film had its flaws. The characters should have more dialogue relating to each other. Being more sociable. It seems that Alvarez didn't waste time pushing these young kids to outer space as they reached the space station. They faced lots of traps. Rain played by Cailee Spaeny is the leader along with her android brother Andy nicely played by David Jonsson. After her deceased parents was given the android to her. I was at a loss at the beginning. Alvarez used lots of elements from all the ALIEN films which was fine, but it wasn't necessary. I know that Alvarez wanted to impress Scott by doing so. This should have been a standalone film. As for the other passengers on the station couldn't find their identity. I don't want to give out any spoilers. The movie was fast-paced, and the special effects were satisfying. It should have been a slow-paced film as with the original film. It had a few scares, now and then. Spaeny and David Jonsson pull the film together. Her acting skills match Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley. She was much tougher in her leadership than Noomi Rapace's Dr Elizabeth Shaw (PROMETHEUS 2012) and a solid performance by Katherine Waterston's Daniels (ALIEN: COVENANT 2017). As you know it points out to a sequel. I don't know what is expected if Fede Alvarez decides to do it or not. I enjoyed watching it. It needed a few improvements. Not saying I hate this film. No. The film needed to be rebuilt. There are a huge amount of ALIEN Fans, and they know what all the ALIEN films deliver. Rather if they were good or bad. Maybe there's something good that can top this one. I wouldn't mind watching again on Blu-Ray or 4UHD.

    Rating: 7.6.

  • Intersting but it seems fitting.

I had no knowledge of a prequel to the Omen Trilogy. It's been putting on and off. Partly due to the Pandemic. Yes, there was speculation of what's it going to be about. Anyway, since I've been a fan as a kid.

Now, after years since the three Films (1976-1981) and those nonsense AWAKENING and that silly remake back in 2006. It seems that the OMEN franchise still resonates with us.

This new film prequel THE FIRST OMEN directed by Arkasha Stevenson, her directorial debut, is an interesting offering. A few characters from the first film, to completely tell a new story of the birth of the Antichrist. The performances were well enough. Some elements from the first film are there too.

A young American nun comes to Rome and encounters an unusual evil while catering to the school for children. She becomes suspicious of supernatural occurrences around her. I don't want to give any spoilers here. I am so accustomed to the original plot created by David Seltzer. I have a few issues and questions about why they took the story to an extent and revised it.

Remember that is a classic horror story, that had the fans excited. There's lots of blood and gore to go around. It's a fair horror story that connects with the original 1976 film directed by the late Richard Donner.

I was hoping to more focus on the original story. The soundtrack was good with a holy choir with resurrecting the classic theme by Jerry Goldsmith. But I must say that it's better than THE EXCORCIST: BELIEVER. Entertaining and it flows confusedly throughout. It's fair but I will watch it again.

    My rating: 7.0.

  • A secluded Thriller about a Man on the run with a conscious

I've watched this film several times and I enjoyed it. This is more of a sleepy thriller. A hitman has been spotted in snowbound Sweden only to hide in a picturesque Italian Village. And he finds love of an Italian beauty.

Jack (George Clooney) is the hitman who is suspicious of his surroundings, and he is given a final assignment by a mysterious agent Pavel (Johan Leysen). Jack is an expert gunsmith who builds a sniper rifle for Ingrid (Irina Bjorklund) who is also an expert assassin. He tries to adjust life in the village by speaking a little Italian to a Catholic priest (Paolo Bonacelli) who he strikes an unsual friendship as he confesses him about his past. Then he meets Clara (Violante Placido) an Italian prostitute who he strikes a relationship. Jack is immediately drawn to her as he learns of prostitutes being murdered there.

I'm not that much of a fan of George Clooney but I digress. His performance is fair and enough. But he plays the character very carefully one scene at a time. Though Jack doesn't trusts no one as he keeps a low profile. He has an affinity for butterflies in which I think it's his way for an atonement of what he has done in the beginning of the film. Placido is very beautiful and she is attracted to Jack and falls for him. Jack feels after this last assignment he can spend his life with her. I will not give out spoilers. The film is directed by Anton Corbijn, who crafts it gently. He explores the beauty of the village in Italy with good cinematography. He gives the characters a place of danger. As I stated before, I liked this film because you can guess the ending of this film as Jack tries to live a simple life rather than looking behind his back if anyone is on his trail. I enjoyed it. A different spy thriller with a unique quality and suspense. I rate this film: 7.2.
