I was raised by my grandparents, our number one pasttime was sitting at home and watching the old movies on tv. My grandparents, to this day, have no use for any movie made after 1969, (I know, they are missing a lot) so I hold them responsible for my addiction to classic movies.

  • Make that a triple

And don't forget Sergeant York! That's another one about pacifism, or "conscientious objections". And while Sergeant York was probably my favorite of the three, then High Noon, I think Friendly Persuasion has more humorous situations which makes the movie seem a little lighter. I especially loved the scene with the widow and her lusty, aggressive daughters! I thought Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire made a great couple, and though she was so stuffy and prudish in the beginning (well, she is a Quaker, after all) you see some changes in her by the end of the picture, and she will grow on you.

Friendly Persuasion has the perfect combination of humor, drama, love story, and action. I enjoyed it.

  • Told You So!

I told a friend of mine that George Clooney was in a TV show called E/R back in the 80s, long before the other "ER" everyone is so familiar with. Of course, the guy didn't believe me, since he thinks he's Mr. Film and TV Expert Know-It-All. So, I just want to say to him, "Told ya so!"

I don't remember Jason Alexander being in the cast, but it was about 20 years ago that I last saw the show and that would have made me about 8 at the time. I do remember one episode in which Maria goes into labor while she's working. She probably yelled a little too vigorously at someone to stay behind the line and started having contractions.

  • "Ethel" does a lot of commercials these days!

I reminisce about "Down to Earth" because I see "Ethel" frequently in TV commercials. I also was about 7 or 8 when the show aired. In response to the other comments, I don't remember "Rocky Road", but I do remember "Small Wonder" and another sitcom called "Check It Out!" starring Don Adams in which all the story lines took place in a supermarket (I think Don Adams was the manager of the supermarket). Does anyone else remember that show? I loved "Down to Earth" and I never missed it. I have a memory of going out to eat with my parents to a barbecue joint that had small televisions on each table, and for a quarter or two you could watch TV while you ate. We happened to be there at the time "Down to Earth" was coming on, and I begged and pleaded and threw a fit because I wanted to watch "Down to Earth" and of course my mom and dad said "I don't think so, you can live without TV for 30 minutes" and that was just one more strike against my dad because I wanted to be just like Lissy Preston--her clothes, her hair, her rebel attitude--and my dad said that she looked like Boy George. I will never forget that.
