It's quite clear from this short documentary that the workplace of American apparel was an unusual one and at times and abusive one. Unfortunately these workplaces are still common across the country and it's a good thing to get it all out in the open. It is a good thing to expose abusers in this format.
With that said, the titular claim of this being a cult was only sparsely substantiated by the content of the documentary. It seemed that a great deal of the "cult" claim hinged on the fact that the CEO was domineering, plus that he handed all of his new hires a copy of a book in a care package.
No, this was just an abusive workplace. These people were not brainwashed, they just knew they could not readily find a better job anywhere else, people that lacked traditional education etc & were thus locked into the job for longer than they ought to have been.
We overuse words like "cult" in our society.

This is an incredible show conceptually & Apple is rightly lauded for funding such a project. Thank you Apple for providing us so much great science fiction, even if it doesn't seem to have been a smart idea for you monetarily speaking.
Unfortunately, this show suffers from a lot of the same things that most modern TV shows suffer from. Instead of making a concise series that could have been accomplished completely in only a couple of seasons, they have decided to fill it to the brim with soap & stretch it out as far as they possibly can.
Imagine the incredible accomplishment of reaching the moon, or Mars. Now imagine instead that the show focuses on interpersonal dramas & surface-level social issues that fill 80+% of the air time. That is essentially For All Mankind. The episodes really do slog along & there is such a huge amount of content that has no meaning to the show.
We are here to be amazed & this show has all of the elements available to have been amazing. I still feel like of the episodes I've seen, if they cut out the 80% fat it would be among the best science fiction ever. Apple seems intent on this series costing a fortune & having as many seasons as possible.

Then by god this is the documentary series for you.
The characters are charming and the production is great, typical for any Netflix series like this.
There's no need for me to spoil any of the plot here. There are many people across the country and particularly in the deep south that are prone to conspiratorial &/or mystical/religious thinking - as in believing in things that are not in any way provable. It's a condition of humanity and we're all susceptible. It's simply the degree to which certain people can be TREMENDOUSLY, spectacularly susceptible. In this case, an individual who is so prone to believing in fantasy that they had to make a whole Netflix series about it.
Enjoy!
