Several years ago I forged my way through the entire Columbo series in sequence. Now, looking to pass the time with some quality television entertainment and not being able to find it, I am going through the series again.
However, watching this particular episode again tonight I must have been in an irritable mood as I found the background music exceptionally annoying and intrusive, with all kinds of odd sound effects, clicking noises and other annoying accompaniment. Consequently, I found myself muting quite a bit of the episode.
Additionally, Kim Hunter's portrayal of a flighty, high-pitched widow also grated on my nerves. Yes, she was supposed to be affecting an innocent, "wouldn't hurt a fly" persona but she got on my nerves as well so much of her time onscreen was muted.
Maybe years from now, if I watch again, I'll feel differently. Otherwise, not a favorite episode. Vic Tayback playing a starving artist was laughable. However, being a fan of Ross Martin (Artemis Gordon of "The Wild Wild West") and Don Ameche ("Cocoon" and "Trading Places"), they made the episode watchable.
