When was the last time we saw a good romance come on screen? Bridgerton is series, and it caters to a commercial audience. But to literature lovers, readers and bookworms who enjoy poetry, and literary conversations, this trope had been dead from cinema. This movie breathed some life back into it. After the series One Day, its been quite a while since I have watched a beautiful tear-jerker. You have seen this story before, in Me Before You. But that doesn't kill the appeal of this film. I loved the fact that grief was processed by different characters in different ways, and our female lead was no sob-woman. She was a strong, brave, charismatic female lead who knew her boundaries and respected others'. I loved the cinematography, the character conflicts, the heartbroken father and this sure touched my heart. Watch it, if you are a literature lover. But also keep some chocolates by your side...
Most horror movies these days rely on cheap jumpscares and predictable plotlines. Almost like a formula. Its almost impossible to find a story that is engaging and/or memorable as all movies have the same old story. They are quite indistinguishable for their counterparts (ahem- the Conjuring Universe-ahem).
However this movie, Marrowbone, athough begining with horror house cliche, it takes a rather sombre, more of an Asian horror approach. The story is less about ghosts and more about grief, about tragedy and personal trauma. Although there are clues from the beginning and any avid psychological horror fan would eventually predict the plot twist, it was still refreshing to see a Hollywood film going that route. Most Hollywood films are devoid of emotional depth, but this one left me shaken. I legit wept for the protagonist.
The story ends with ambiguity, whether the ghosts were real or not is left upto the viewer. I personally believe they were, to an extent. Technically the film was artistic, cinematography was excellent. Acting-wise the performances were unbelivably good. All the young actors did a wonderful job. The film is packed with brilliant performances. Characters were few, location was beautiful and it managed to keep the story airtight. I'd recommend this film to all the cinephiles put there.
