Home nursing an illness, came across this little gem. Free on Prime, fairly recent, and Edie Falco, why not? I had not previously heard of it.
Edie, flawless as usual, plays a put-upon working-class Mom divorcee. She manages her family of misfits with undying devotion and unconditional love. The actress playing daughter Sarah is hilarious, kudos to the grandma too.
The film is at times very funny, poignant, and heartfelt. I truly enjoyed it. Michael Beach was a special treat!
I'm not sure why this needs 600 minimum charcters. I see many other reviews that are very much shorter. Do a portion of reviews fit a certain criteria? Wish I knew!!!

I never watched this 11 years ago when it premiered. Ran into it recently while recovering from a minor illness.
On season 2 and it really has hit its stride. I actually am forming quite a bond with all of the characters. They are drawn so deeply from multiple viewpoints. It was a little jarring at first but you get in the groove by Season 2- at least I did. Even the minor characters are riveting.
This series is really really really good- I'm hooked!
I have to keep writing so I will say I'm not sure how many seasons there are. The timeline moving back and forth takes you forward a few years then back again. It works and keeps you coming back for more.

I've been sorely disappointed in any film post 2020. Modern films have lost their magic to me, and instead seem to be not entertaining or enlightening films but pablum for those who view themselves as agents of social justice. I remember seeing a propaganda art show that had film posters from WWII- I feel like this is how it felt probably. Banged iver the head constantly with "messages". Its tiring, boring, and oh-so-predicable.
So back go I to the 1990s- 2010 where I find pure film watching enjoyment and moral messages that happen organically through good storytelling instead of the ham-fisted shoving down the throat. Who knew.
Even the naivete is refreshing. Here Huey Lewis plays Gwenneth Paltrow's deadbeat father. This is just one of a few comcurrent storylines. The plot meanders through these slice of life characters who are connected by their karaoke performances.
Its not vulgar in any way, one minor awx scene is all. It is a bit dark in places which surprised me. But that era of films did commonly imcorporate underlying drama that often felt meloncholy.
I very much enjoyed this film and top-notch performances by Paul Giamatti, Maria Bello, Andre Brucher are all fantastic. Huey is fine, as is Gwenneth. There's a cameo by beautiful Angie Dickenson. I'm telling you, you Can't go wrong with this one. Pop some Orville Redenbachers and settle in!
