  • Doesn't translate well to the big screen

Screen adaptations of novels can be hit and miss and I'm afraid this one is firmly in the 'miss' category for me. It's extremely slow, fails to build any kind of suspense or tension, and I frankly didn't care for any of the characters or their fate, including the two children, as harsh as that may sound.

The ending is rather predictable too and lacks the shock factor the director would have hoped to achieve. Perhaps the only positive is the acting - Karin Viard puts in a good performance as main character Louise and at least makes the film watchable.

All-in-all, another disappointing and unnecessary screen adaptation of a popular thriller novel.

  • A four-part series that's three parts too long

Like a lot of people, I love a good unsolved mystery and the D. B. Cooper case has always intrigued me. It's one of the most brazen crimes ever committed, but also one of the most impressive in its perfect planning and flawless execution.

So I was expecting to enjoy this Netflix docu-series, but unfortunately it wasn't what I was hoping it would be. Instead of a deep-dive into the case and Cooper's potential identity, there's one half-decent episode that focuses on the case and three filled with ridiculous conspiracies and delusional, self-important private investigators milking their 15-minutes of fame.

The first episode would have been fine as a standalone. Unfortunately Netflix tried to string it out as a mini-series, and the rest was pretty awful.

  • Visually stunning but emotionally void

There's no debating that '1917' is a groundbreaking piece of cinema. With the entire film consisting of only one continuous, uncut scene, it makes for impressive viewing. It will no doubt be remembered for its innovation and breathtaking cinematography.

But while '1917' excels in the visuals department, I was left disappointed overall. The problem with creating such a visual feast is that people end up more interested in how the film looks than the storyline and characters. It felt like the plot was complementing the visuals a lot of the time rather than the other way round, and it is severely lacking in emotional depth and character development.

Overall, while the film looks fantastic and is well acted and produced, the storyline failed to grip me and the characters are difficult to connect with.
